    Multiversum

    ArtDepoo gallery, Tallinn · 2–30 October 2019

The costume exhibition 'Multiversum' took place at the ArtDepoo gallery in Tallinn in October 2019. The exhibition was organised by the Estonian Scenographers' Union and curated by Jana Hanikova. 'Multiversum' was the third exhibition in the union's series '1:10', focused on innovation in theatre costumes.

The aim of the exhibition was to explore the dialogue between form and content and its possible outcomes — confrontation, collision, mutual complementarity or something else. The gallery space offered theatre designers the opportunity to work in conditions different from their usual environment.

ERR Kultuur created a photo gallery of the exhibition, introducing the work and distinctive features of scenographers.

When costumes are created for theatre performances, multiple factors must be considered, such as the director's vision, the actors' freedom of movement, and the need for quick costume changes between scenes.

The exhibition referred to the concept of the multiverse — the hypothesis that many other universes exist in parallel with our own. These worlds are connected on both a material and a spiritual level.

Artists were offered ten otherworldly characters from different operas as inspiration, from which five were chosen whose costumes were presented at the exhibition.

Hope / La Speranza was depicted by Eugen Tamberg and Ann Lumiste. A new interpretation of the Queen of the Night was created by Rosita Raud, Tuulikki Tolli, Kristi Leppik and Kairi Getman. Norma was presented by Liina Tepand and Ariel by Kersti Prosa. The Titan's Siren — a completely fictional character — inspired Inga Vares, Jana Hanikova and Laura Kõiv.

Visitors were able to immerse themselves in the otherworldly characters and the soundscape that helped reveal the diversity of universes.

Markus Robam created original music for the exhibition based on Kurt Vonnegut's novel, which gave this fictional character a place among the others.
